Briar is a messaging app designed for activists, journalists, and anyone who needs communication that keeps working when the internet does not. Messages travel directly between devices over Bluetooth and Wi-Fi, or via the Tor network when the internet is available — there are no central servers to take down or subpoena. Messages are end-to-end encrypted, stored locally, and synced directly between contacts. Forums and blogs can be shared and spread through the same peer-to-peer network. If the device is off, messages queue and deliver when it reconnects. Briar is open source (AGPL-3.0), funded by grants and donations, and contains no ads or analytics.
